20 February, 2018 | Note by Steven Strehl

On February 2nd, 2018 the Corsican Assembly voted in favor of the creation of an ad hoc commission to elaborate the feasibility of a basic income on the island and the possibility to carry out a trial. The enactment states the following objectives: to reduce the complexity of the social benefits system, to fight poverty and to respond to the challenges of digitisation. In addition, it states that basic income needs to be part of a policy that aims at making the social benefit system fairer and embraces the creation of new jobs.
